Tooth Extractions

Permanent teeth are supposed to last a lifetime, but that isn’t always the case. A tooth extraction is the surgical removal of a tooth from the socket in the bone, usually because of disease or injury (unless extractions are needed to make room for the placement of braces, dentures, or bridges). Reasons that necessitate an extraction could be:

  • Infection

  • Trauma or a broken tooth

  • Tooth decay

  • Problems with wisdom teeth

  • Overcrowding of teeth in the mouth

  • Baby teeth do not fall out to allow the permanent teeth to come in

Some people worry about having teeth pulled, but it’s not as scary as it sounds. Knowing what will happen ahead of time helps ease that fear more than anything.

Dr. Storm makes tooth extractions as painless as possible. Before getting started, he will inject local anesthetic to numb the entire area where the tooth will be removed. Although you will be able to hear what is going on during the extraction, you should be totally pain-free. If you experience any discomfort whatsoever, you should immediately let Dr. Storm know, and he will administer more anesthetic.

The tooth will be gently rocked back and forth using a set of forceps to loosen it from the bone. Some teeth refuse to come out in one piece. If so, it might have to be removed in pieces. Again, there should be no pain.

Before you leave the office, Dr. Storm will give you instructions on how to care for the extraction site after returning home.
