The most common ingredient in teeth whitening kits is a hydrogen peroxide-based bleaching agent that acts to oxidize or break down stains on the teeth. Home kits do not always provide the expected results, because they only contain 3% to 20% of bleaching agent. In-office solutions contain from 15% to 43%. The higher concentration allows for whitening to happen faster and allows a higher degree of whitening. A dentist is required for the more concentrated solutions, as it requires close monitoring to prevent damage to the teeth or even sensitivity. Bleaching effects may need to be boosted by heat, light, or both. Each patient’s needs and oral condition are taken into account when deciding on the best procedure. A whitening session usually only lasts from 30 to 60 minutes, and the results can be three to eight shades brighter, but it may take several visits to produce the desired effect.

To help maintain the white teeth after the treatments are finished, continue brushing and flossing daily and avoid high-staining drinks and foods for a minimum of 48 hours. It is best to avoid coffee, tea, wine, any carbonated beverages, tomato or curry sauce, and berries.
