Sealants

Dr. Storm provides dental sealants for children to help avoid developing cavities. Children are at a higher risk of cavities, especially the back teeth, where it is harder to reach when brushing. Sealants are relatively simple to apply and inexpensive, especially if it avoids the expense of future fillings in the long term. Sealants save time, money, and the pain of having teeth filled.

While teaching children to brush more effectively, dental sealants can be applied to help protect the teeth during this vulnerable period of life. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC) reports that dental sealants are beneficial in preventing cavities.

Dr. Storm paints a thin plastic coating on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, mainly of the molars and premolars (the teeth in the back of the mouth). The sealant places a protective shield over the tooth enamel, bonding into the nooks and crannies. The grooves in the back teeth are more prone to collecting food and bacteria, causing plaque buildup and cavities. Sealants are most commonly used in children from the ages of 6 to 14, the ages most susceptible to tooth decay. Adults are only treated with sealants if they do not already have fillings and are deemed to be at risk for cavities.

Sealants need to be checked routinely for chips and wear, but they can last as long as ten years. A new coat can be placed as needed.

Dr. Storm’s staff can help you with any insurance questions about sealant coverage. Most dental insurance companies cover the cost of sealants for children under the age of 18.
