The concept behind veneers was invented over 100 years ago in Hollywood, California. Actors were asking for brighter smiles for their on-screen careers. Falst tooth fronts were being affixed to their teeth for filming, which allowed for fabulous smiles for a short time, but there was no way to keep the them attached permanently until dental advancements over 40 years later.

In the 1960s, research and development in adhesive dentistry discovered that bonding agents adhered better if teeth were prepared by “roughing” the surface to allow a better base for the bonding agent to attach. This bonding technique became widespread in 1982 and dentists started placing permanent veneers. The popularity of veneers has risen since.

Veneers are extremely thin shells of tooth-colored material that is bonded to the front of a tooth. A veneer can change the size, shape, color, or length of the tooth and are used for several different conditions:

  • Chipped, broken, or worn-down teeth

  • Malaligned, uneven, or irregularity shaped teeth

  • Stained teeth

  • Gaps between teeth

Porcelain veneers (also called dental porcelain laminates) are one type of veneer available from Dr. Storm. Different reasons for choosing porcelain include:

  • They are strong and long-lasting.

  • They look more like natural teeth.

  • They do not stain as easily as resin veneers.

Veneers are also popular because they do not require as much tooth enamel to be removed as with caps or crowns. Application of veneers usually takes two to three dental visits.

If you think veneers may be the answer for you, call Dr. Storm to make an appointment for consultation.
