Fillings

Decay damages teeth and needs to be removed as soon as possible. A filling is used to “fill” in where the decay was removed and restore the tooth back to normal function and shape. The decayed space needs to be closed off to prevent bacteria from entering through the weak area of the tooth.

Before starting the filling process, Dr. Storm administers a numbing injection around the area of the tooth with the decay. The area of the cavity is prepped, and the filling is applied.

Fillings are available in different materials. Patient preference, patient budget, and the position in the cavity are taken into account when choosing the best one for the filling process. They include the following:

  • Gold: Gold is stronger than other materials, and these fillings can last 10 to 15 years on average. It is the most expensive type available.

  • Silver amalgam: Silver is also strong, also lasting up to 10 to 15 years, and is strong enough to withstand normal chewing forces. Silver may end up being less expensive than composite fillings.

  • Porcelain: Porcelain fillings (onlays or inlays) are produced in a lab and are bonded to the teeth. They are resistant to staining and made to match the color of the existing teeth, but the cost is also similar to the cost of gold.

  • Composite resins: Composite resins are also made to match the color of the existing teeth and can also be used for chipped, broken, or worn-down teeth. Typically, a smaller amount of tooth needs to be removed to apply composite resin.
