Dental Implants

Dental implants are small titanium screws placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. An implant provides a more stable and durable replacement for missing teeth, as they are the closest substitute for natural teeth. The implants bond to the bone, making a sturdy base for one or more crowns (artificial teeth).

For over 30 years, implants have been one of the best tooth replacement options available. The number one health benefit is that implants prevent bone loss and can stimulate bone growth, as well as looking like natural teeth. The pressure created by chewing keeps the jawbone strong by keeping up daily stimulation.

When teeth are missing, the body to start to reabsorb the bone in that area of the jaw. When a tooth is lost, the bone underneath the lost tooth can experience up to 25% of volume loss in the first year, and the bone volume continues to decrease.

Placing an implant where bone loss has occurred can help bring some of the bone density back if caught early enough. Bone begins to bond with the implant and grow around it.

Titanium is used for implants because of the ability of titanium to fuse with bone. A titanium post (called a pillar) is screwed into the implant. The pillar attaches to the crown. Crowns can be ordered in different materials, depending on patient preference, and are made to match the color of the remaining natural teeth.
